Dandruff

Dandruff is a mild form of seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is a common condition that causes the skin on the scalp to flake. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can also affects the eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, chest and groins. It is a common chronic recurrent condition that causes the skin to be red, greasy, flaky and itchy. Some infants have a similar condition and present with thick, scaly patches on the scalp. This is also known as cradle cap.

The exact cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis is not known. It is thought that the Malassezia yeast may be involved. This yeast live in the sebum (skin oil) of human skin. In most people they do no harm. But some people may react to these yeast germs, making the skin become inflamed. People who have immune system problems, such as HIV and AIDS and people with Parkinson’s disease, are more likely to develop seborrhoeic dermatitis. Also, emotional stress is thought to aggravate the condition. While this condition is not harmful, it can be embarrassing.

Treatment for dandruff

Dandruff is treated by anti-dandruff and medicated shampoo which will help to reduce the flakes, inflammation and itch. Steroid scalp lotion can be used for severe cases. For seborrhoeic dermatitis on the face or body, an antifungal cream or mild steroid cream or non-steroid cream can be applied to the rash.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis may recur. Each episode can be treated as it occurs. However, if you have frequent episodes, you may wish to consider using treatment to prevent the condition from recurring.
