Birthmarks are coloured marks on the skin that are present at birth or soon afterwards. Common birthmarks include congenital moles, salmon patches, Mongolian spots, naevus of Ota/Ito, café au lait macules, infantile haemangioma, port wine stain, epidermal naevus and naevus sebaceous.

Treatment of birthmarks

Most birthmarks are harmless and disappear without treatment, but some may need to be treated. This is why it is important to get a birthmark checked by your dermatologist. After assessment of the birthmarks, advice will be given about the type of birthmark, its normal progression and whether treatment or further investigations are required.
